How to build and generate a client report with Report Wizard

Open Report Wizard from a client's plan, choose and arrange pages, save your layout as a template, and generate a PDF for your client.

Report Wizard turns a client's scenario into a PDF report. You choose the pages, put them in order, add your own notes and pages, then generate the PDF.

Nothing is selected when you open it. You start by picking a template or adding pages.

Open Report Wizard

  1. Open the client's Financial Insights and select the scenario you want to report on.

  2. Select Print Report. Some layouts label this button Report Wizard.

Report Wizard opens on the scenario you were viewing.

Start your report

Until you add a page, the preview shows Add A Page To Start The Report with your starting points:

  • New Report: a blank report. You add every page yourself.

  • Basic Report: Report Cover, Table of Contents, Disclaimer, Retirement Goal, Cash Flow Chart and Net Worth Chart. Retirement Goal is left out if the plan has no retirement goal.

  • Full Report: every page available for this plan. It can be long, so trim it before you generate.

  • My Templates: layouts you've saved.

  • Admin Templates: layouts shared with you. Team members see the workspace owner's templates. Associates see their primary advisor's.

A template only pre-selects pages. Every available page stays in the list, so you can add or remove pages afterwards.

You can switch templates at any time from Selected Template in the sidebar.

Choose and arrange pages

The sidebar has two lists:

  • Pages In Report: the pages in your report, in order and numbered.

  • Pages To Add To Report: everything else available for this client.

  • Add or remove: hover a page and select + to add it, or - to remove it.

  • Reorder: drag a page in Pages In Report by its handle.

  • Jump to a page: select its title in Pages In Report to scroll the preview to it.

The Table of Contents page lists the pages in your report.

Switch scenarios

Use Current Scenario in the sidebar to report on a different scenario. Report Wizard reloads for that scenario. A page selection you haven't saved is cleared, so save it first if you want to keep it (see "Save your layout"). Notes and custom pages you've already saved stay with the scenario they belong to.

If a page isn't in the list

Pages are built from the client's plan, so some only appear when there is something to show.

  • Partner, corporation and family trust: partner pages need a partner. Corporate pages need a corporation. Family Trust pages need a family trust.

  • Goals: Retirement Goal, Estate Goal, Education Goal, Major Purchase/Expense Goal and Debt Repayment Goal pages each need that goal in the plan.

  • Monte Carlo, Variance Analysis and CPP OAS Optimizer: these pages use your last saved run. Changing the plan clears the saved run, and the page drops out of the list. Run the analysis again, then reopen Report Wizard. Do this as the last step before you build the report.

  • Wealth insights and to-dos: All Insights, Insights Priority, Insights Priority and Short-Term, and Insights Priority, Short-Term and Long-Term each appear when there are matching insights. To add specific insights, select Wealth (Tax/Estate) Individual Insights, choose them under Insights to Add (or select Add All Pages), and save. Client To-Do appears when the client has to-dos.

  • Other conditions: OAS Clawback Chart appears only when the plan shows a clawback. Toggle Review (beta) appears only when the scenario has toggles.

  • Comparison pages: these need a snapshot or a comparison scenario. See the next section.

Compare snapshots or scenarios

There are two separate comparisons, and each adds its own pages.

Snapshot to Compare

  • This dropdown appears in the sidebar only when the client has snapshots. It starts on the client's default snapshot.

  • Choosing a snapshot adds pages such as Snapshot Comparison - Cash Flow, Snapshot Comparison - Estate Worth and Snapshot Comparison - Net Worth Statement. Goal comparison pages (Education, Estate, Debt Repayment, Major Purchase/Expense) appear when the snapshot includes that goal.

  • Your choice applies to the current session only. It isn't saved with the report.

Scenario For Comparison

  • You set this in Financial Insights, not in Report Wizard.

  • Select the pencil icon next to Current Scenario to open Scenario Management, then choose a scenario under Scenario For Comparison.

  • Reopen Report Wizard. It now offers the Scenarios - pages (for example Scenarios - Estate Worth) and chart versions titled with the comparison scenario's name. Plan Comparison adds a second column.

  • Without a comparison scenario, Plan Comparison shows only the current scenario.

Add notes and your own pages

Notes on a page

  • Many pages show a pencil icon in the preview. Select it to add or edit a note.

  • Notes are saved with the client's scenario, not with a template.

Create a Custom Page

  1. In Pages To Add To Report, select Create a Custom Page.

  2. Enter a title (up to 600 characters) and your content, then select Save.

The page is added to your report and appears in the list as Custom Page: your title. Use the pencil to edit it. The bin permanently deletes it from this scenario. To only take it out of this report, use "-" instead.

The editor supports headings, lists, bold, italic, underline, highlight and alignment. The Insert menu adds images, tables, page breaks, horizontal rules and timestamps.

A custom page belongs to the scenario you created it in. For reusable pages, create a page template in Advisor Settings and bring it in with Import a Page Template. Edits you make after importing apply to this scenario only and don't change the template. See "Creating and using page templates in Report Wizard".

To change the cover, see "Set up your cover page details".

Save your layout

Enter a name in New Template Name above the preview, then use one of these:

  • Save: stores the page list and order, plus a copy of any custom page content.

    • If you own the selected template, Save replaces it. A changed name renames it.

    • If you started from a Base Template or an Admin Template, Save creates a new template under My Templates.

  • Save As: creates a new template under that name and ties it to this scenario. When you reopen Report Wizard for the scenario, that page selection is restored. Later changes to the original template don't affect it.

  • Delete: appears only for templates you own. Confirm with Yes, Delete This Template. Deleting is permanent.

Templates don't store page notes, the year ranges you choose on tables, or your snapshot choice. Those stay with the client's scenario.

Generate the PDF

  1. Check the scenario, comparison selections and pages in the preview.

  2. Select Generate PDF Report.

  3. Report Wizard shows Preparing print... and then opens your browser's print dialogue. This can take around 10 seconds. Keep the tab open.

  4. Choose Save as PDF as the destination and save the file.

Portrait or landscape

For Independent reports, set the layout under Advisor Settings, then Report Wizard Settings, then Report Appearance, then Print Orientation. The options are Portrait (the default) and Landscape. Reopen Report Wizard after you change it.

In landscape, the Net Worth Chart is replaced by its Alt View version. The page note boxes aren't shown.
