Client discovery guide

What Client Discovery does, how clients move through it, and where to find each how-to.

Client Discovery is the client-facing side of Planworth. You invite a client, they create their own login, and they fill in a guided questionnaire. Their answers go straight into their client profile.

What you can use it for

  • Collect information. Clients enter their own details through a questionnaire.

  • Share a plan view. Clients log in to see their dashboard, Financial Insights, Wealth Insights and documents. You choose which of these each client sees.

  • Let clients explore. With Client Mode, a client can try what-if changes on their own copy of a scenario. The changes clients make does not affect the scenario you create.

What you need

  • The Client Discovery add-on (see Turn on Client Discovery).

  • An email address on the client's record.

  • A supported browser for your client: Chrome, Edge or Safari. Firefox is not supported.

How it works

  1. Turn it on. Add Client Discovery to your plan and accept the Client Discovery terms the first time you open the page.

  2. Invite your client. Use Invite New Client, Invite Existing Client or a sign-up link (see Invite a client to Client Discovery).

  3. Your client creates an account. They open the email, set a password and agree to the terms.

  4. Your client answers the questionnaire. It's four stages, and progress is saved as they go. If you turned off the Discovery Tool service for them, they go straight to their dashboard instead.

  5. You're notified. When your client finishes, you will be notified by email.

  6. You review and decide what they see. Check their answers in the Evaluation. Then choose which services and scenarios they can view.

Which invite should I use?

Situation

Use

The person isn't in Planworth yet

Invite New Client. This creates the client record from the name and email you enter.

The client is already in Planworth, or you've started their Evaluation or a plan

Invite Existing Client. Their record needs an email address.

You want one link for your website or email template

Generate Sign Up URL. The client enters their own name and email.

Reading the invite status

The Invite Status/Step Completed column on the Client Invites page shows where each client is.

Status

Meaning

Invited

The email was sent. The client hasn't logged in yet.

Account Created

The client has logged in for the first time.

A step name (for example Basic Info, Family Members, Real Estate)

The last questionnaire step the client finished.

Completed

The client finished the questionnaire.

What your client goes through

The questionnaire has four stages. Some steps only appear when they apply to the client.

Stage

What it covers

1. Basic Information

Name, date of birth (must be 18 or older), province, citizenship and marital status. If the client is married or common-law, partner details are added too.

2. Family Members

Children and other family members, and the family tree.

3. Preliminary Plan Data

Career and salary, expected retirement age, real estate, debts, pensions, which kinds of accounts they hold, TFSA and RRSP room, corporation ownership, insurance, wills, spending and other details. Their answers here decide which detail steps they see in stage 4.

4. Account Balance Import & Detailed Plan Data

Detailed entry for the items they selected: accounts, assets, liabilities, pensions, insurance policies, corporations and estate documents. Despite the name, clients type these in. Nothing is imported from their bank.

The account entry step is skipped for clients who say they hold no investment, retirement or other accounts. Once a partner has been added, the client can't change their marital status.

When they finish, clients see "Well Done! Thank you for completing your discovery questionnaire" and land on their dashboard.

What your client sees afterward

Every client who finishes sees their dashboard home, which has net worth, estate, insurance and other statement panels, family tree and advisor notes. Alerts also appear in the client portal. Everything else depends on the services you grant.

What it unlocks

Discovery Tool

The questionnaire. This is on by default.

Basic Financial Dashboard (Goals Only)

Goal progress, without charts.

Full Financial Dashboard (Goals/Charts Only)

Goals plus read-only charts and tables.

Wealth Insights (Tax/Estate Insights Roadmap)

The Wealth Insights tab.

Client Mode (Client Scenario/Edit)

SideDrawer

Secure document sharing.

You must choose which of your scenarios the client can see. Shared scenarios are live, so changes you make appear for the client.

After your client finishes

  • You'll get the completion email. Open the client to review their answers in the Evaluation (see Review what your client submitted).

  • Clients can update their answers later from the Go to Discovery Tool button on their dashboard.

  • You can see which step a client reached at any time on the Client Invites page. There are no reminder emails.

Good to know

  • Clients can use the portal in English or French. The invite email is sent in both languages.

  • Clients sign in at app.clientdiscovery.co. Always send that address, not a copied redirect link.

  • Each client has one login. A partner can't be invited separately.

  • Invite a client to Client Discovery

  • Resend, re-invite or fix a Client Discovery invite
